What is the hardest anatomy to draw? ›

Some of the most challenging things to draw include facial expressions, foreshortening of the human body, drapery folds, drawings based on your ideas instead of a direct reference, hands, movement, and gestures.

When you first approach figure drawing, you need to start out with establishing the basic volumes of the figure using spheres, boxes, and cylinders. By simply beginning with these basic shapes and then building up the complexity as you go along, you will be able to make your drawing maintain its sense of dimension.

The human body is complex, so creating anatomically correct drawings isn't something you can learn in a day; it may take weeks of practice and studying reference drawings to truly understand the shape of each muscle and how they all connect.

It's something that you slowly build alongside your other skills, so in total it might take a couple of years to really get a good understanding of anatomy. But you don't have to think about it as this huge project that you only succeed with after two years. Break it down into smaller chunks.

Try to visualize the anatomical structures by looking at your own body. Examine your body and picture the structure and its location in your head. Another effective way to remember the information is to write it down. Also, you can say it aloud or combine both of these methods.

Learning anatomy is not an easy task. The sheer volume of information which you need to learn in record time creates the perfect breeding ground for mistakes. This equates to wasted time, inefficient learning, and the constant need to start again.

One day, you might want to include the model's neck and shoulders, or their hands. Even the most perfectly painted face would not look good if it is incorrectly connected to the body.

Hair can be one of the easiest parts of the human body to draw, so keep it simple! While most body parts are fairly similar to draw, the huge variety in hair styles, lengths, and even textures can make drawing human hair an interesting challenge and creative exercise for any artist.
