The first generation of Jeep Compass SUVs has been in around for quite some time now and the last major update it received was back in 2011. Put in direct competition with some highly popular entry-level midsize SUVs like the Ford Escape, the Honda CR-V, and the Subaru Forester, the $18,659 Jeep did find it hard to find a decent number of takers compared to what other models of the automaker did. Even though Jeep’s name is something that is not synonymous with build or dependability the 2014 Compass does manage to place itself on the better side when it comes to recalls and customer complaints. So should the 2014 Jeep Compass be your next family SUV or possibly a daily driver? We have compiled the list of issues this SUV is known for in this article to make that decision easy for you.

2014 Jeep Compass User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical Complaints

  • Engine- Throttle body issues have been a common problem on the engine of the 2014 Jeep Compass. Loss of acceleration, random stalls, hesitation when accelerating, starting trouble and engine malfunction lights are the most common indicators of a faulty throttle body or electronic throttle body actuator component. The repair mostly involves the replacement of the damaged component and the estimated cost is around $700. The average failure mileage reported is around 70,000 miles. Engine oil pump failure is also known to fail with mileage and cause the engine to overheat. A recall (ID-13V552000) has also been initiated by the automaker to replace the damaged oil pumps.
  • Transmission- Transmission failure and rebuilds are not that uncommon on the 2014 Jeep Compass. Stuck shifter, unwanted shifts to neutral, failure to upshift, grinding noise, and jerking at slow speeds are the main indicators of transmission issues. Most of these issues have a possibility of getting fully sorted with a TCU re-program or a fluid flush, but internal component failures do necessitate a rebuild or replacement.
  • Service brake issues- Brake squeal and ABS sensor failure were some common issues on the initial batches of the 2014 Jeep Compass. Though the braking performance was not affected, the noise, vibration, and brake pad wear were excessive. Replacement pads were given initially to reduce these problems. The electronic stability control system malfunction was also a commonly seen issue, the root cause of which could be traced to the faulty wheel speed sensors.

Electric System complaints

  • Alternator issues- Alternatorinternal shaft wear and noise are some common issues on the 2014 Jeep Compass. A battery warning light along with hesitation to start or a fully drained battery are some symptoms of a failing alternator. If excessive wearing or damage to the internal shaft or bearing is found, the alternator needs to be replaced.

Structural complaints

  • Rear end noise- The rear wheel bearing on the 2014 Jeep Compass is subject to premature wearing and causes issues like grinding noise or vibrations from the rear end of the vehicle. If detected, the wheel bearings need to be replaced along with adjoining components if excessive wear is found.

Safety Complaints

  • Airbags- Intermittent illumination of the airbag warning light has been one of the most widespread issues on the 2014 Jeep Compass. A faulty restraint control module causes the warning light to remain on despite the seats being occupied and as reported also causes the airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioning system to not function as intended. This issue was something that the manufacturer was aware of and did initiate a recall (ID-16V668000) to replace the restraint control module.

15th September 2016

16V668000

Airbag/ Seatbelt pre-tensioner may be disabled

The Occupant Restraint Control (OCR) module may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags, seat belt pre-tensioners, and side air bags from deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

The dealers will replace the OCR, free of charge and the recall began on August 15, 2017.

6th November 2013

13V552000

Loss of oil pressure may cause an engine stall

Due to abrasive debris in the balance shaft bearings, these engines may have a loss of engine oil pressure, possibly resulting in an engine stall or engine failure, which if happens while driving will increase the risk of a crash.

The dealers will replace the engine balance shaft module, free of charge. The recall began on December 24, 2013.

Should you buy a used 2014 Jeep Compass?

Apart from being dated, there is pretty much nothing that is worryingly wrong with the Jeep Compass that would come across as a deal breaker. Though the recall numbers and complaints don’t seem to be dying out, the overall reliability status is more or less in line with the best of what this segment has to offer when it comes to overall reliability. Even though this old SUV would not come by in our top recommendation lists, the 2014 Compass would be the best model year to own for all those Jeep Enthusiasts out there. There are a few niggle to watch out for like any other vehicle, but nothing that would break your bank.
